‘splain the Name!

Before people ask, I’ll explain the name of the blog.

Anyone who knows me knows that the band They Might Be Giants is near and dear to my heart. They’re great rock band with a razor-sharp wit and musical chops that will knock your socks off. But under the musical polish and just around the corner from the dark cynicism so often prevalent in their lyrics (particularly during the late 80s and 90s), there’s a deep passion for love, life and honesty.

One of my favorite TMBG songs, perhaps my absolute favorite, is Ana Ng. The story of Ana Ng is one of longing – of feeling/knowing that your soulmate lies on the other side of the world and there’s nothing you can do to get there. Also set against the backdrop of the 1964 World’s Fair, there’s a sense that the narrator has always just missed running into this mythical “Ana Ng.” Tragic, really. Brilliantly composed, you almost forget how sad a song it is because of the incredibly poppy and staccato nature of the music.

The chorus goes, “Ana Ng and I are getting old/And we still haven’t walked in the glow of each others majestic presence/Listen Ana, hear my words/They’re the ones you would think I would say if there was a me for you.”

So why pick this phrase out of this song?

Because I’m turning the phrase around. Because I am fortunate enough to have stopped looking for Ana Ng. I feel so overwhelmed and am so lucky and so amazed to know I have found my place in the world with Meg, and we’re about to make the world a better place with our children.

So I say to her,  hear my words; They’re the ones I say because there is a me for you.

And by extension, this is a place for you all to hear our words, because there is a you for us.

xoxo

That is so incredibly sweet. Also, TMBG rocks!! We’ve decided that the children we know should have their Science cd for Christmas.

I don’t know why I have not seen this before now, but it made me smile for you and for where you are in your life.
