So just a quick reminder

While I catch up with posts, remember that over to the left there’s a link to our Flickr account, where photos show up much faster than posts do. So if you want a preview of the photos I’ll be using in posts later, hop over there!

Talk to you soon!

Halloween 2012

Ahh.. Halloween. Probably my favorite time of year honestly. Dressing up, playing pretend, acting like a kid, getting candy! Pretty awesome stuff. While (in my world) Greek Fest is the herald of the Fall season, Halloween is the beginning of the holiday season: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years.

Last year Parker was born mere days before Halloween and didn’t really “participate” at all, what with all the crying and eating and pooping and sleeping that goes on after being delivered into the world. But this year… HAH! This year was different. Parker was one and she could walk and do all sorts of things!

Brenna told us starting around late July that she would be dressing up as a ladybug for Halloween, and Parker would be a butterfly. We thought that was adorable and promptly forgot about it because as a 2 year-old this was definitely going to change… except it didn’t. Every few weeks we would be reminded,

“Fo Halloween, I’m gunna be a wadybug! And Pawkah is gonna be a butterfwy!”

(or some version of kid-speak, but that’s pretty close). So when the Halloween store opened, that was our goal. Finding a ladybug costume for Brenna was super easy. Finding the butterfly costume proved near impossible. We went through pages of costumes with Brenna looking for a replacement for Parker and she decided she could wear a bat costume instead.

BOO! I'm a bat!

BOO! I’m a bat!

Brenna got to wear her costume to daycare for their Halloween event, and we dressed them both up for Boo at the Zoo at Riverbanks Zoo. On the big day we took them both to Nannie and Papa’s to trick or treat in their neighborhood.

Trick or Treat!

Trick or Treat!

Brenna was significantly less shy this year than last year, and she even walked up to the “scary house.” (A house that really does Halloween up – witches, cauldrons, music, fog, a graveyard, etc…). She was a little scared afterward, but I picked her up, told her it was cool and funny and she agreed and gave me a high five. A little reassurance goes a long way.

Parker is still a little young to really “trick or treat” so she mostly came along for the ride in the wagon, but she had an absolute blast. She’s so happy and social! She was laughing and waving and grabbing at Brenna’s wings all night, when she wasn’t fiddling with the bat hood on her head that kept falling down.

Love you…

... Now gimme your wings!

… Now gimme your wings!

It was a great night for the kids, and a great night for Daddy to spend with them, since I love Halloween so much. I hope they grow up with the same love for this silly costumed celebration that I have.

Plus we totally went to the pumpkin patch! If you missed it, it’s in this previous post about Fall

Ok! See ya next time.

Parker’s 1st birthday

At the end of October we celebrated Parker’s 1st birthday. The 27th actually fell on a Saturday, so we had our party then. Meg and I rarely have this many people over because it gets crowded quickly, but hey – we’re family! We’re ok with that!

Our friends Debra and Alex made it over for about an hour at the start before they had to leave for family matters. It was great to see them. We got to hang out a few weeks later and play some board games and catch up. We hope to do that again once their baby is born and things settle down (lol, settle down…).

We had a nice crowd of family as well: Nannie & Papa, Moonie & Fad, Tracey, Hayden, Courtney, Bo, Jennifer, Brooks & Adelyn, and of course Meg, Brenna, Parker and me.

This was really Parker’s first “gift opening” since she was all of 2 months old last Christmas. She got into it pretty quickly and enjoyed playing peek-a-boo with her gifts.

For me?

For me?

Bo was very kind to think of Brenna and brought her a little gift as well. She was very happy and gave him a big thank you.

We had pizza, drank a beer or two (or three…), watch Marcus Lattimore injure his leg again (in what I suspect is his last game for the Gamecocks), and then we had cake! Parker wasn’t sure what to make of it at first, but she eventually sort of got it. And by “got it” I mean smeared it all over her body, more or less completely missing her mouth, and later breaking out in a rash from the dye. But that faded quickly and caused no discomfort. She was still happy, smiley Parks.

Not sure if want.....

Not sure if want…..

It was a very fun day, and we all settled in for a nap afterward.

Parker continues to grow so fast over these last two months since then that it’s almost like looking at a different baby going back through these photos. She’s much sturdier on her feet, she’s given to fits of laughter and playfulness, running away with shoes and socks, or just this morning giggling as she ran away when I tried to put her coat on her.

There are many more updates to come in the next week or so, as I try and catch everyone up on the last two months before we close out the year. Stay tuned!

Love you all!

You know where this is going…

The other night Brenna was picking bed time stories to read. We have a big pile of ‘typical’ stories that stay beside her bed that we can grab in a pinch and know she’ll enjoy them. But this night was different. She went to her bookshelf to pick something new. “Ok,” I thought, “We could use some new books, maybe we’ll rotate something into the Pile.”

But then she hesitated over a book.

I instantly panicked.

“Let’s read this story!” she said innocently and enthusiastically.

“Oh, honey, let’s get a different story tonight.”

But her mind was made up. It was this book. Tonight. Now. Maybe twice.

“No, let’s read this one. Will you read it? I want to say ‘yes, please.'” (for those of you unfamiliar with Brenna this is how she indicates she’s asking nicely.)

“Ok honey, bring it over.”

And so I read it. We enjoyed it. When I was finished she fortunately wanted to read another book; a lighthearted critter book about cleaning your room. It was significantly easier for daddy to read.

But it’s done. One of those weird moments I kind of dreaded and also really looked forward to. We’ve read it. We’ll read it again, and daddy will probably cry. Again.

But it makes us happy.

Thumper’s first steps

Last night (October 4, 2012) Parker took her first unassisted step. Then she fell. But then she tried again. Then she fell. But later, she tried again….. and fell. But she was clearly ready.

I grabbed our shopping cart toy and set her up and grabbed my camera.

Our littlest one is starting to walk! Woohoo!!!

Wait… Our littlest one is starting to walk.. OH NO!!!

The long awaited “is anyone still here?” post

Where to even start??

First off, we’re slack on this blog. I’ve said it a dozen times – we WANT to be better about updates. We really do. I guess in this era of Facebook and Google, etc… it’s easy to feel like your updates are out there anyway, but the whole idea of this was to have a central place for updates 1) for people who don’t Facebook and 2) that we were in control of – if we wanted to take the site down we could, and we would always have access to the content. So we’re working on it. Even if it’s a little thing like “Brenna just did X” or “Parker just said Y” (she didn’t really say “Y” yet, by the way – we’re still working on words).

Turns out, two kids is more than twice the work of a single child! Who knew? (Well, a lot of you, actually, but thanks for the surprise!) And between the house cleaning, cooking, feeding, bathing, work, and of course the enormous number of festivals and parks visits we like to do, etc.. it’s hard to get motivated to focus on the blog. BUT! You deserve updates, and our children should see these when they’re older.

With any luck, expect more updates. Smaller, simple updates; A photo, a 30 word anecdote, a link to a YouTube video. (OMG FORESHADOWING!)

So what’s been going on for the last few months? Well, funny you should ask!

Parker has been growing at a rapid rate! It’s crazy! She’s gone from lying around to crawling and speeding around the house, and now she’s standing, cruising, and just a week or two short of walking it seems (OR LESS – OMG MORE FORESHADOWING!). Yeah, all that’s happened so quickly.

She’s growing so fast too. She’ll be a year old at the end of this month, but she’s already wearing some 18-month clothes. Of course baby clothes estimates vary wildly from manufacturer to manufacturer, but still… she’s nearly as tall as Brenna!

I have shoes!

Kickin’ back

Parker on the way to Thom and Rachel’s wedding

Parks had some nasty ear infections recently, and a lot of it was while I was traveling for work. Consequently she began to sleep with Meg in our bed for comfort. Unfortunately it was at an age when she latched onto the idea that this was now her bed. I came home to find myself sleeping on the couch, Parker sleeping in my place in bed, and the crib full of cats. Fortunately after a few months we’ve created a decent system where she tends to fall asleep in our bed for a few minutes and allows herself to be happily moved to her crib where she sleeps all night. Yay!

Brenna loves reading, and absolutely adores daycare, which we call “school.” And school it is! She has homework two nights a week where we reinforce number and letters they work on during the day, and she has her own Tinkerbell folder that she’s very proud of.

We’ve found a few TV shows Brenna likes now too. When we last left off I believe we were still highly into Wonder Pets and a little Dora. We still see some of that, but she’s more interested in Go, Diego, Go and an awesome TV show on PBS called Dinosaur Train. Diego has much better music than Dora and everyone loves Dinosaurs. I have to admit there’s little as adorable as listening to Brenna talk about her T. Rex named “Roar!” and her Apatosaurus named “Stompy.” They’ve made dinosaur fossils out of Play-Dough, and they’re “hatching” a dinosaur in class. It’s really lit her imagination on fire, and it’s just awesome to see.

she really does scream GAMECOCKS! at the TV or at the store.

“My dress is kind of like an art show” – Brenna (actual quote)

Boxes – still the best gift in the world.

Brenna will turn 3 in January, and she doesn’t want you to forget this. Also, it’s nearly “Pumpkin Time!” and “It’s gonna be Halloween!” Our first baby is officially aware of holidays, and gets excited about them. Months ago she told us she was going to be “a ladybug” for Halloween. We expected this to change pretty quickly since from minute to minute Brenna is interested in different things, but she’s stuck to her guns, and we’ve purchased her costume. She’s also informed us that Parker will be a butterfly, daddy will be a pirate, and mommy will be a flower. We’re still working on convincing mommy this is a good idea. Daddy is also considering being a Pandaren, because ninjas are cool, but Tai Chi Pandas are hilariously awesome.

Meg & Travis
We’re busy with work and figuring out how to raise children. We’ve been really enjoying Greek Fest, the Italian Festival and we’re looking forward to all the things to come – birthdays, the Fair, Halloween, Thanksgiving, St. Nicolas Festival, Christmas, etc… just so much!

We recently were able to go to the PGA at Kiawah Island thanks to my job, which was super-awesome-amazingly-special-keen. We had a great time

Out for a walk on the beach

Having a drink

We also just got back from our first BIG trip with the kids – an eight hour car ride to the Outer Banks, NC for Thom and Rachel’s wedding. It was an absolutely amazing time with incredible friends, great food, tons of laughs and a group of people who just adore kids. And honestly, the kids did pretty darn well in the car. We’ve learned a lot about traveling with them and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.

Though with the wind blowing it was really hard to get a photo of everyone looking at the camera

Other Things:
I’ve moved where we store our kids videos on Youtube. They’re now all under my account at the following link. (UPDATE – ok, well apparently wordpress is borked with links, so copy/paste this)

Flickr is still updated, though not as regularly as I’d like since most of our photos end up on Google/Facebook due to the convenience of being tied to our phones. But it IS still updated, so keep checking it! (Update – same issue as above)

That’s it for now! Thanks for sticking with us.

We love you,

Travis, Meg, Brenna, and Parker.
